Seems to work fine on x86_64-musl, thanks for this!
I tried disabling LTO in the past and it didn't really help, is it
possible for the other two things you disabled to have such a large
effect?
To unbreak this for musl, I had to update glycin, for which I used
[this](https://gitlab.alpinelinux.org/alpine/aports/-/blob/master/community/fractal/cargo-update-glycin.patch)
Alpine's patch. For images to work, one then also needs to have the
matching major version of glycin-loaders installed, for which I built
#58453.
I then also tried to cross compile for both i686 and armv7l and both
were successful with a similar memory usage, so this can likely be
unbroken for 32bit now as well.

we don't cross compile for i686, we natively compile (i686 code runs on x86_64), and when doing that it still runs out of memory. anyways, I've integrated this with #58453 now so i'll close it |

Right. You could allow just the cross compilation for i686 then no? The
template you pushed to #58453 reports it as broken even when cross
compiling.

that would require fully reconfiguring our build infrastructure, and it's not something we want to support. |
